How to Find Low OBL Backlinks

How to Find Low OBL Free Backlinks Using Ahrefs (2026 Guide)

When I started link building back in 2019, I made the same mistake almost every beginner makes. I was chasing high DR sites with no plan, sending pitches to pages that already had 200+ outbound links, and wondering why my client rankings were not moving. Then one weekend I sat with Ahrefs for 6 hours straight and figured out a filtering trick that changed how I built links forever — finding low OBL pages where my link would actually pass real value. This is exactly how I do it today across SerpZenith client campaigns.

What is OBL and Why It Matters So Much

OBL stands for Outbound Links — the total number of external links on any single webpage. When a page links out to 5 websites, each link gets a much bigger slice of the link juice pie. When the same page links out to 80 websites, your link becomes a tiny crumb that barely moves the needle.

Google does not split PageRank equally across every link, but the principle still holds. A page with low OBL passes more authority per link. So if you find a page where you can place a free link — guest post, resource page, broken link, blog comment with editorial value — and that page only links to 8 or 10 other sites, your single backlink is worth maybe 5x more than the same link on a page stuffed with 100 outbound links.

This is the gold most SEOs miss. Everyone is obsessed with DR and DA. Smart link builders care about OBL first, then DR.

Why Free Backlinks Still Work in 2026

Some people think free link building is dead because Google updates have killed low-quality directories and spammy guest post networks. That part is true. But there are still thousands of legitimate websites accepting free contributions — niche blogs, university pages, association directories, “best of” listicles, broken link replacements, and resource pages run by hobbyists and indie publishers.

The trick is not to chase every free opportunity. The trick is to find the ones with low OBL counts so your link actually does something. A free link on a page with 6 outbound links beats a paid link on a page with 90 outbound links almost every time.

What You Need Before You Start

You need an Ahrefs subscription — Lite plan ($129/mo) is enough for this method. The Standard plan gives you more exports and historical data which is helpful when you scale. You also need a working knowledge of three Ahrefs reports — Site Explorer, Content Explorer, and Backlinks. If you have never used these, spend 30 minutes clicking around before you follow this guide.

You also need a clear list of 5 to 10 competitor websites in your niche. Not your direct business competitors only — also blogs, news sites, and authority pages that rank for your target keywords.

Step 1 — Pull Your Competitor Backlink Profiles

Open Ahrefs and go to Site Explorer. Drop in your first competitor domain. Click on the Backlinks report on the left sidebar. This shows you every backlink pointing to that site.

Right away you will see thousands of links. Do not panic and do not export everything. We are going to filter aggressively because 90 percent of these links are useless to you.

Set your filters in this exact order:

  • Link type — Dofollow only
  • Platform — WordPress, Blogger, Drupal, Joomla, custom CMS (skip social media, forums, comments)
  • Language — match your target language
  • Traffic — minimum 100 monthly organic visits to the linking page
  • DR — minimum 25 (not 50 — be flexible here)

Now you are looking at a much cleaner list. Maybe 200 to 500 links instead of 5,000.

Step 2 — Add the OBL Filter (This is the Magic Move)

This is the step nobody talks about. In the Ahrefs Backlinks report, scroll right or click the Filters dropdown and find “External links” or “Links on page.” This is your OBL filter.

Set it to maximum 15 outbound links. Some people go up to 25 but I keep it strict. Anything below 15 OBL is a sweet spot. Below 10 is even better.

Apply the filter. Now your list might shrink to 30 to 80 links. These are the pages where your link will actually carry weight. Export this filtered list to CSV.

Do this for all 5 to 10 competitor domains. By the end you should have between 300 and 800 unique low OBL pages across all your competitor exports. Combine the CSVs in Google Sheets, remove duplicates, and you have your master prospect list.

Step 3 — Use Content Explorer to Find New Opportunities

Site Explorer shows you who links to your competitors. Content Explorer shows you who is writing about your topic right now and might link to you if you ask.

Open Content Explorer in Ahrefs and search for your main topic. For example, if you sell yoga mats, type “best yoga mats” or “yoga for beginners.” Set these filters:

  • Published — last 24 months (recent content gets more traffic)
  • Referring domains — minimum 10
  • Words — minimum 1,000 (longer articles tend to link out more)
  • DR — 25 to 70 (avoid mega sites that ignore outreach)
  • Language — your target

Now go through the results manually. Click into 20 or 30 of the most relevant articles and check the OBL count. You can use a free Chrome extension like SEOquake or Detailed SEO Extension to see OBL count instantly without clicking through every page.

Articles with 5 to 12 outbound links are your best targets. Save them to your master sheet.

Step 4 — Find the Easy Win Pages

Inside your filtered list, look for these specific page types because they are the easiest to land free links on:

Resource Pages

Search Google with these operators alongside your Ahrefs data:

  • your topic + "resources"
  • your topic + "useful links"
  • your topic + inurl:resources

Cross reference with your Ahrefs export. Any page that shows up in both is a hot prospect. Resource page owners actively look for new sites to add — your job is just to make their job easy.

Broken Link Opportunities

In Site Explorer, go to the Outgoing Links section and click on Broken Links. Ahrefs shows you every page on a competitor’s site that links to a dead URL. Find the broken link, recreate similar content on your site (or already have similar content), then email the page owner saying “Hey, your link to X is broken — here is a working replacement.”

This is the highest conversion rate outreach I run. Often above 15 percent reply rate when the OBL is low.

Listicle Articles

Listicles like “Top 20 [your niche] tools” or “15 best [your niche] blogs” naturally link out a lot, but the ones with 8 to 14 items are perfect. They are detailed enough to rank, short enough that adding your link does not feel forced.

Step 5 — Score and Prioritize Your Final List

Do not pitch every single page on your list. Score them first. I use a simple 1 to 10 system based on:

  • OBL count (lower = better)
  • Page traffic (higher = better)
  • Topical relevance (closer to your niche = better)
  • DR of the linking page (not the whole domain — the actual page)
  • Last updated (recent updates mean active editor)

Anything scoring 7 or above goes into your priority outreach queue. Everything else stays in a backup tier.

Step 6 — Outreach the Right Way

Even the best prospect list dies if your outreach is generic. Three rules I follow:

First, find the actual editor or author name — not the contact form. Ahrefs does not give you emails directly but tools like Hunter.io or RocketReach plug right in. Most pages have a byline. Check the author bio for a Twitter handle or LinkedIn profile.

Second, mention something specific from their page in the first sentence. Not “I love your blog” — that is dead. Try “Your point about X being underrated really stuck with me — I see most people miss it.”

Third, give them a clear, easy ask. Don’t ramble. Say what you want, why it helps their readers, and how they can add it in under 30 seconds. The easier the ask, the higher the yes rate.

Common Mistakes I See Beginners Make

  • Chasing only DR 70+ sites. Big sites ignore outreach. Mid-tier sites in the DR 30 to 60 range respond more, especially when OBL is low.
  • Ignoring the OBL filter completely. This is the biggest one. People build “high DR” links on pages with 80 outbound links and wonder why nothing moves.
  • Mass emailing. Sending the same template to 500 people gets you 2 replies. Sending 50 personalized emails gets you 8 to 12 replies. Quality wins.
  • Not tracking responses. Use a simple Google Sheet or a tool like BuzzStream to track every email. Follow up once after 6 days. Then move on.
  • Skipping broken link building. It is the easiest free link strategy in 2026 and most people are too lazy to do it.

Tools That Make This Faster

Ahrefs is the core tool but you can speed things up with:

  • SEOquake or Detailed SEO Extension — instant OBL count on any page
  • Hunter.io — email finder
  • NeverBounce — verify emails before you send
  • Google Sheets — your master prospect list (keep it simple)
  • Mailshake or Lemlist — outreach automation with personalization

I do not recommend using free Ahrefs alternatives for this method. The OBL filter and link traffic data in Ahrefs is what makes this whole process work. Free tools like Ubersuggest do not have that depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many low OBL backlinks should I aim for per month?

Quality over quantity. 5 to 10 high-quality low OBL backlinks per month will outperform 50 random links. For a small site, 3 to 5 strong placements monthly is plenty to see ranking movement within 60 to 90 days.

What is considered a “low” OBL number?

Below 15 outbound links is good. Below 10 is excellent. Below 5 is rare and worth chasing hard. Pages with 50+ OBL are link farms even if they look pretty — skip them.

Can I use this method without paying for Ahrefs?

Not really. You can try the 7-day Ahrefs trial or use Webmaster Tools (free but limited to your own site). For competitor analysis with OBL filtering, Ahrefs is the only tool that does this cleanly. Semrush works too but the OBL filter is less direct.

How long until I see ranking changes?

For most sites, 60 to 120 days after the links go live. Faster on newer sites with less existing authority. Slower on competitive niches like finance or insurance. Be patient and keep the pipeline going.

Are these backlinks safe from Google penalties?

Yes — when you do this method properly. You are getting editorial links on real websites with real traffic. That is exactly what Google wants. The only way this turns risky is if you spam outreach or buy links from PBN networks. Stick to genuine pitches and you are fine.

Wrapping Up

Finding low OBL free backlinks is not magic. It is just smart filtering. Most SEOs are too lazy to set up the OBL filter in Ahrefs, which is why they keep building weak links on bloated pages. You now have the exact 6-step process I run for SerpZenith clients to find pages where a single backlink moves the needle.

Set aside one weekend to build your first prospect list. You will probably end up with 100 to 200 high-quality low OBL pages. Pitch 30, land 5 to 8, and watch your rankings start moving in 2 to 3 months.

If you want my team at SerpZenith to handle the entire process for you — research, outreach, placements — reach out below. We have done this for clients across the US, UK, and Germany since 2019.
