Ahrefs Alternative: What Actually Replaces It (and What Doesn’t)

People search for an “Ahrefs alternative” for one of two reasons: the $129+/month price tag, or a specific feature they think a cheaper tool covers just as well. Sometimes that’s true. Often it isn’t. Here’s the honest breakdown, not a listicle padded to rank for the term.
Semrush
The closest real competitor. Comparable keyword database size, a stronger PPC/paid-search toolkit, a noticeably worse backlink index than Ahrefs by most third-party comparisons. If you need one all-in-one platform and paid search matters as much as organic, Semrush is a legitimate swap. If backlink data quality is what you actually care about, it’s a downgrade.
Ubersuggest
Cheap, genuinely useful for casual keyword ideas and a quick site audit. Not a real substitute for competitive backlink analysis or content-gap research at any serious scale — the data depth just isn’t there. Fine as a supplement, not as a replacement.
Google Search Console + free tools
Free, and GSC gives you data Ahrefs can’t — your actual click and impression numbers, straight from Google. What it doesn’t give you: competitor data, backlink visibility, or keyword difficulty for terms you don’t already rank for. A DIY stack of GSC plus a few free checkers covers maybe a third of what a paid tool does.
Moz
Respected metric (Domain Authority is Moz’s, not Ahrefs’) but a smaller link index than either Ahrefs or Semrush at this point. Good for a second opinion on authority, thin as a primary research tool.
The honest answer
If you’re comparing tools because you’re trying to do your own SEO in-house, the real question usually isn’t “which tool is cheapest” — it’s whether the hours spent learning any of these tools are worth more than having someone who already knows how to read them. Every engagement we run uses full Ahrefs-level data as part of the work, which is one reason clients don’t need their own subscription. See what that looks like with a free audit, or read what a Domain Rating or Domain Authority score actually tells you before you chase either one.
