Local Citation Building

Consistent NAP listings across the directories that matter — built, cleaned and verified by hand.

Citations are the least glamorous work in SEO. No one brags about directory listings. But when Google checks whether your business is real and where it operates, these listings are a big part of the answer — and inconsistencies quietly hurt you.

What we build

  • Core directories — the major data aggregators plus the general directories Google actually checks. Around 30–50 listings for most US businesses.
  • Niche directories — the ones specific to your industry. A roofer needs different citations than a dentist; generic packages skip these, we don’t.
  • Local directories — chamber of commerce, city guides, regional listings for your specific market.

Consistency is the whole game

“123 Main St.” on one site, “123 Main Street Suite 2” on another, an old phone number on a third — each mismatch weakens the signal. Every citation we build uses your exact NAP (name, address, phone), matched character-for-character to your Google Business Profile.

Already have messy citations?

Most established businesses do — old addresses, renamed businesses, duplicate listings from that agency in 2019. Building new citations on top of bad ones just spreads the confusion. That’s what citation cleanup is for; we usually recommend cleanup first, then building.

Delivery and proof

You get a spreadsheet of every listing — live URL, login details where accounts were created, and status. Typical delivery is 2–4 weeks because many directories have manual review queues. Every login is yours to keep.

Citations are one leg of the local stool — they work best alongside a full local campaign or at minimum a properly optimized GBP.

Why NAP consistency matters more than most business owners realize

Google cross-references your business information across the web to build confidence in what’s actually accurate. When your address, name, or phone number varies even slightly across different listings, a suite number missing on one, an old phone number lingering on another, an abbreviated street name here versus a spelled-out one there, Google’s confidence in any single version drops. This doesn’t just fail to help, it actively works against the trust signals your Google Business Profile and website are trying to build. A handful of clean, consistent citations do more for local ranking than fifty inconsistent ones.

How we choose which directories actually matter

Not every directory on the internet is worth a listing. We prioritize the major data aggregators Google’s own systems reference directly, general directories with genuine domain authority and traffic, and industry-specific directories relevant to your exact business type. A roofing contractor benefits from different niche directories than a dental practice, and a generic citation package that treats every business the same misses this entirely. Local directories, chamber of commerce listings, city-specific guides, add another relevant layer specific to your actual service area.

Dealing with citations that already exist and are wrong

Most established businesses we work with already have a messy citation footprint, an old address from a previous location, a business name from before a rebrand, duplicate listings created by different marketing efforts over the years that were never cleaned up. Building fresh, correct citations on top of this existing mess doesn’t fix the underlying inconsistency, it just adds one more correct listing to a sea of conflicting ones. This is why we typically recommend citation cleanup first for established businesses, correcting or removing the bad listings, before building new ones, rather than building blind on top of a known problem.

What you’ll need to provide

Your exact, current NAP information (the precise version you want used everywhere, matched to your Google Business Profile), and access or willingness to verify a few listings by email if a directory requires business confirmation. Most of the work happens on our end once we have accurate source information to build from.

Timeline and what delivery looks like

Most citation builds take 2-4 weeks, largely because many directories have manual review queues outside anyone’s direct control, submissions go in quickly but approval timing varies by platform. You’ll receive a full spreadsheet showing every listing built, its live URL, login credentials where an account was created (which remain yours permanently, not something we hold access to), and current status.

Common questions

How many citations do I actually need?
Most US businesses see solid results from 30-50 well-chosen core and niche citations rather than hundreds of low-quality ones. Volume matters less than accuracy and relevance to your specific industry and location.

Will this alone improve my Map Pack ranking?
Citations are one input among several, they support the trust and consistency signals Google’s local algorithm weighs, but work best combined with a properly optimized Google Business Profile and genuine local content, not as a standalone fix for a weak overall local presence.

What if I’ve rebranded or moved locations?
This is one of the most common causes of citation inconsistency. We’ll need to identify and correct or remove old listings referencing outdated information as part of the cleanup process before building fresh, accurate ones.

Order citation building standalone, pair it with citation cleanup if your existing listings are messy, or get both included in a full local SEO campaign.

Why we recommend cleanup before building for most established businesses

Adding new, correct citations while old, wrong ones remain live doesn’t cancel out the inconsistency, both versions coexist and Google still sees conflicting information across your footprint. The more effective sequence, and the one we recommend for any business with more than a year or two of history, is identifying and correcting the existing problem listings first, then building the remaining gap in coverage with fresh, accurate ones, rather than layering new correct data on top of old incorrect data and hoping the correct version wins out.

How we confirm the work actually holds

Citations can occasionally get flagged, removed, or altered by a directory after the fact, so we spot-check a sample of listings some weeks after building to confirm they’re still live and accurate, rather than assuming a one-time submission stays correct indefinitely. If a directory rejects or removes a listing, we address it rather than leaving a gap in your coverage unnoticed.

A common mistake business owners make on their own

Submitting a slightly different address or phone format to each directory as a way to save time is one of the most common self-inflicted citation mistakes, even a minor variation like “St.” versus “Street” or a missing suite number counts as an inconsistency to the systems cross-referencing your data. Copying an old NAP format from a previous location or business name is another frequent issue we find during cleanup, one outdated listing can undermine the consistency of dozens of otherwise correct ones.
