Internal Linking Optimization

Route your site's authority to the pages that make money — a deliberate internal link architecture.

Every site has a hidden budget: the authority its pages pass to each other. Most sites spend that budget by accident — footer links to the privacy policy, sidebar links to random posts, money pages sitting three orphaned clicks from anywhere. Fixing this is the cheapest ranking improvement most sites can buy.

What a link architecture fixes

  • Orphaned money pages — pages with revenue potential that almost nothing links to. Google reads that as “even this site doesn’t think this page matters.”
  • Authority leaks — your strongest pages passing their weight to pages that don’t need it, while the pages that do starve.
  • Anchor text waste — “click here” and “read more” tell Google nothing. Descriptive anchors are free relevance signals.
  • Depth problems — anything more than three clicks from the homepage gets crawled less and ranked worse.

How we do it

We crawl the full site and map how authority currently flows — which pages hoard it, which starve. Then we design the target structure: hub pages feeding their clusters, clusters cross-linking where relevant, money pages positioned to receive weight from everywhere sensible. Then we implement every link by hand, in context, with natural anchors. No plugin auto-linking that stuffs the same anchor on every page.

Where it fits

Sites with 50+ pages see the biggest wins — the more pages, the more misrouted authority. It’s included in on-page SEO at smaller scopes, and pairs naturally with new content, which should never launch orphaned. Check what your current structure looks like via the free audit.

What the audit and rebuild actually involves

We start with a full crawl, not a sample. Every page gets logged along with every internal link pointing to it and from it, so we can see the real picture instead of guessing from a handful of spot checks. From that data we build a map showing which pages currently receive the most internal authority and which sit nearly isolated, sometimes pages that were core to your business but got buried after a site redesign or a few years of content added without anyone updating the navigation around them.

Next comes the target structure. This isn’t random link-adding, it follows a deliberate hierarchy: your highest-authority pages (strongest backlink profiles, most organic traffic) link down to the commercial pages that actually make you money, related content links across to genuinely relevant siblings, and every single page connects into the structure rather than being left to stand alone. We call this an AKA structure internally, Authority pages linking down to Knowledge pages, which link up and across, and it’s the same framework we use across our own site.

Anchor text, done properly

Internal link anchor text can be far more descriptive than external backlink anchor text, since Google doesn’t apply the same manipulation scrutiny to a site linking to its own pages. Most sites waste this entirely, defaulting to “click here” or “learn more” out of habit. We write every anchor to actually describe the destination page in a natural, varied way, since that’s a genuine relevance signal search engines use and most competitors simply aren’t bothering with.

What you’ll need to provide

Access to your WordPress admin (or whichever CMS you’re on) is the main requirement. We’ll also ask which pages you consider your most important commercially, since that context helps us prioritize where authority should flow even when the current site structure doesn’t reflect it yet. If you have Google Search Console connected, sharing view access speeds up the audit since we can cross-reference actual click and impression data against the link map.

Timeline and what delivery looks like

A full audit and link-map typically takes 3-5 business days depending on site size. Implementation is priced and scheduled separately once you’ve seen the plan and confirmed which pages matter most to your business, since that’s a judgment call only you can really make with full context. You’ll get a before-and-after report showing internal link counts per page, so the improvement is something you can actually see, not just something we tell you happened.

Common questions

Will this fix rankings by itself?
Internal linking helps search engines find and appropriately weigh content that already exists, it can’t rescue genuinely thin or outdated pages. If your core issue is weak content rather than poor linking, we’ll tell you that honestly instead of selling a linking project that won’t move the needle.

How is this different from what an SEO plugin does automatically?
Automatic internal linking plugins typically match keywords and insert links algorithmically, which often produces the exact same repeated anchor text across dozens of pages, a pattern that reads as manipulative rather than natural. Every link we add is placed by hand, in a sentence that makes sense, with anchor text that varies the way a real writer’s would.

Do you touch external links too?
This service is specifically internal linking, the links between your own pages. If you also need help with backlink building from other sites, that’s a separate service, though the two work well together.

How often does this need to be redone?
Sites that publish new content regularly benefit from a link audit roughly every 6-12 months, since new pages naturally start as orphans until someone deliberately connects them. One-time cleanups for static sites tend to hold up much longer.

The specific mistake we see most often

Business owners tend to link everything back to the homepage by default, treating it as the safe choice whenever a link seems appropriate somewhere in the content. This actually wastes an opportunity, since the homepage usually already has plenty of authority and visibility on its own without any extra help. The pages that genuinely need more internal links pointing to them are your specific service, product, and location pages, the ones actually responsible for converting a visitor into a paying customer, not the homepage that’s already working reasonably well.

We also frequently find the opposite problem on hub or category pages: an attempt to link to every single child page at once, which dilutes the value of each individual link rather than concentrating it where it matters. A hub page should link to its most important children prominently, not bury thirty links of equal visual weight in a wall of text.

How this pairs with content strategy

Internal linking works best as part of a deliberate content plan, not a one-off cleanup. Every new piece of content we help you publish, whether that’s a service page or a blog post through our content writing service, gets built with its internal linking role decided in advance: what it links up to, what links down to it, and which siblings it should connect across to. That’s a meaningfully different outcome than writing content first and trying to retrofit links into it months later once the orphan problem has already set in.
